Atlantis
“At 8pm on June 5th, 8498 B.C., the core parts of Asteroid ‘A’ punched the first decisive hole in the fracture zone of the Atlantic Ridge. The forces of hell were let loose. Through these two newly formed vents the glowing red-hot magma shot up at terrific speed and mixed with the liquid above it – the waters of the Atlantic. This created all the conditions for a submarine volcanic eruption of the greatest possible violence. The fracture seam was torn apart. The bottom of the sea burst open. All existing volcanoes were activated and new vents formed. Terrestrial fire and ocean water became embroiled in ever-increasing volume. Magma mixed with steam. The chain of fire ran all the way between the two continents from the Beerenberg volcano on Jan Mayen in the north to Tristan de Cunha in the south.” (excerpt from “The Secret of Atlantis” by Otto Muck)
And written in Genesis:-
“The same day were all the fountains of the great deep broken up, and all the windows of heaven were opened. And the rain was upon the earth forty days and forty nights...Fifteen cubits upward did the waters prevail; and the mountains were covered...All in whose nostrils was the breath of life, of all that was in the dry land, died. And every living substance was destroyed...and Noah only remained alive, and they that were with him in the ark. And the waters prevailed upon the earth a hundred and fifty days.”
These weren’t isolated incidents. Added to this triple cataclysm, the planet decided to shift its polar axis and the Gulf Stream went thousands of miles north instead of circulating in the mid-Atlantic. Also, there is a deep layer of lava around the Azores (purported mountain peaks of Atlantis).
According to Plato, an Athenian philosopher, Atlantis really existed. It is mentioned as a historical fact – “There was, beyond the strait you call the ‘Pillars of Hercules’ (Gibraltar) an island, larger than Asia and Libya together, from where it was still possible then to sail to the other islands and thence to the whole continent on the other side, which encloses the sea truly named after it.”
Atlantis was described as a veritable paradise, a group of fertile, lush islands all interconnected by many rivers and tributaries. The account goes on to say that this was an astonishingly advanced civilization, with castles full of splendour, magnificent temples and walls surrounding the city supposedly covered in tin and orichalc.
There are many clues that point to the existence of an ancient sunken civilization. Around the Azores, thousands of feet underwater, are sandy beaches. It's not possible for this sand to have originated on the sea bed in the first place, as beach sand is formed by the force of waves breaking on the shore. So it follows that the discovered sandy beaches were, at one time, above sea level. Other areas of this period that are now covered by water are, for e.g., the land bridge between Gibraltar and Africa (this might explain the presence of the Barbary Ape exclusively in Gibraltar and North Africa), the sunken plateaus around the Azores, the Canary and Madeira Islands, the Azores-Gibraltar ridge and the extensive Bahama banks, which covered an area of thousands of square miles before they were immersed, among others.
One of the most fascinating finds, admittedly, is the Bimini Road or Wall. It was discovered in 1968 by Dr J. Manson Valentine and he described it as “an extensive pavement of rectangular and polygonal flat stones of varying size and thickness, obviously shaped and accurately aligned to form a convincingly artifactual arrangement”. A curious fact is these stones were laid out in straight lines, something that doesn't ever occur in nature. Also, the southeast end of this grand roadway ends in an exquisitely curved corner … manmade?
Plato's beautiful narrative goes on to say :-
“...In those days (approx 11.5 thousand years ago) the Atlantic was navigable and there was an island situated in front of the straits which you call the Columns of Heracles (Hercules): the island was larger than Libya (means entire African continent) and Asia put together, and was the way to other islands and from the islands you might pass through the whole of the opposite continent which surrounds the true ocean; for this sea which is within the straits of Heracles (the Mediterranean) is only a harbour, having a narrow entrance, but that other is the real sea and the surrounding land may be most truly called a continent.”
Plato's mention of a continent on the other side of the 'true ocean' seems to point to an ancient awareness of North America, and it might even have inspired Columbus, who, it is reported, had a map showing Atlantis and the lands beyond.
It is interesting to note that, even today, some races claim to be descended from the Atlanteans. Take the Basques of Northern Spain and South Western France. Their language has no links with the other European languages. In Brittany, there are ancient lanes comprised of huge upright stones (menhirs) that go all the way down to the shores of the Atlantic and then continue on under the ocean. They most likely led to old settlements that are now beneath the sea but, it's probably safe to think, that these roads take you to Atlantis, like an ancient signpost, showing the way to a forgotten paradise, lost deep in the Atlantic Ocean.
The only indication of a lost civilization isn't just from mankind's memoirs. Some animals, birds and marine creatures have certain consistent behavioural patterns, which don't make much sense today, but may have been normal thousands of years ago. The Norwegian Lemming's conduct becomes radical when a profusion of their population occurs; food becomes scarce so the lemmings gather in multitudes and rush across country and rivers till they reach the sea, at which point they all dive in and swim westwards till they drown. Local legends and Atlantologists concur in that the Lemmings are trying to swim to a land that was located in the west, where food was available when theirs ran out. One of the most well-known phenomena is the strange journey of the Sargasso Sea eels. The adult eel spends most of its lifetime in fresh water rivers in Europe. Then, as if it were a calling, the eels start making their way out of Europe in direction of the Atlantic Ocean, tracing an established path from thousands of years.
Eventually they reach their destination – the Sargasso Sea by Bermuda. There is where they mate and die, and the baby eels then begin their journey back to Europe where the whole cycle will be repeated. It has been theorized that this ancestral path was perhaps through a river in Atlantis.
There are many clues indicating the existence of an island in the Atlantic. Legends about this lost paradise have been recounted on both sides of the Atlantic for thousands of years – Aztecs, Native Americans, Incas, Phoenicians, Greeks, Egyptians and many more. In 1998 and then 2007, underwater research was carried out using the latest technology in satellite and aircraft imaging. They spotted the Bimini Road mentioned above … they discovered something else too. A group of buildings likened to the ones in the Yucatan Peninsula were found at approximately 40 metres underwater. One set closely resembles the Puuc Maya pyramid network located on the Gulf of Mexico. When these structures were side-scanned, an entire front facade of several buildings, even stairs, doorways and columns were observed.
Proof that Atlantis is real? Maybe we will be able to solve this compelling mystery one day...
