Our Trip to Santa's Home

11th Oct 2019

It was the trip of a lifetime and I needed to plan it very carefully. Everything had to be just perfect! It hadn't been my intention to wait until Ruben was 14 years old to organise this beautiful trip; it just hadn't been viable before then. Luckily we're both loyal, avid fans of the big guy in the red suit, so Ruben's age was irrelevant!
So we set off on our journey to Lapland in early December, brimming with excitement and anticipation and bundled up with warm clothes and good cheer.

We travelled to London Gatwick, where we stayed overnight at the Premier Inn, and woke up early the next day for our flight to Rovaniemi.

As soon as we stepped through the aircraft door, we knew we were in for a treat. There was Christmas music playing over the tannoy and the air stewardesses were wearing Santa hats! We looked at each other with big smiles on our faces, amazed at this unique experience.

It was a really cheerful flight – the staff organised competitions and the captain announced winners over the tannoy, and all the while the festive music continued its merry tunes. Such a friendly atmosphere! On approach to Rovaniemi, there was thick cloud covering all the land. Then the aircraft dived in and suddenly, what can only be described as Siberian landscape, appeared around us. It was all white with snow, and rows of tall evergreens bordered the airstrip.

We were told to wrap up or they wouldn't allow us off the plane – and they weren't kidding! Temperatures of -10 degrees centigrade hit us as we walked down the stairs and stepped onto the thick snow; but our hearts immediately warmed up when we saw this big round sign, as soon as we entered Arrivals, which quoted “Rovaniemi The Official Airport of Santa Claus”. Christmas was here!

Before going to our hotel, we were all taken to these big stores where a group of very efficient guys were handing out proper clothing to us (it put me in mind of a troop of whirling dervishes!). They were real experts! All they needed was a quick glance at you and hey presto! Your snowsuit along with gloves, woolly hats, scarves and boots were swiftly proffered to you! An absolute perfect fit too!
We then embarked on the final leg of our journey, which was rather peculiar as it was already dark even though it was only mid afternoon!

Our hotel looked like it had come out of a Christmas fairytale! A beautiful lodge right in the middle of the forest. It was exactly as promised and more!
Ruben and I darted to our room, quickly changed into our snow gear and went straight out again to explore the surroundings. We had never experienced anything like it before. Kids were toboganning down the little hill that led to the frozen lake and just 50 metres away was the snowmobile hire!

We gingerly crept to the back of the hotel and stood in awe with the snow up to our knees! We looked up to this endless hill of snow and evergreens. You almost expected a wolf or bear to approach you!

When we were back in the hotel, I made sure I booked us on as many excursions as possible. We had a sample of a reindeer ride. These guys were depicted to perfection in The Santa Clause, let me tell you! Even down to the grunting they make. So cute! The following day we were taken by bus to Santa Village. The path up to the Village was magical – bright coloured lights at intervals on the snowy hill. It was still dark at 10 am so the effect was enchanting. We had quite some fun inside – we had tea and snacks whilst we watched a show put on by the elves, we visited Santa's post office and Ruben even sat behind the big guy's desk! But the highlight of the day, of the entire trip, was yet to come.

At around lunchtime, they bussed us off to see Santa's house and office! The rep advised us not to get into the queue to see Santa because we would be there a long time, but we took no heed and, thankfully, there weren't that many people waiting to go in. As if we would miss that! The magical feeling has never left me after that day. An elf called Bif welcomed us in and took our names and chatted with us about our hometown. Clever elf! Then, after a little waiting time, Bif came back and ushered us in to the place every child dreams of. Santa sat in a big armchair, surrounded by beautiful artifacts and a pile of presents behind him. He came complete with big hands, twinkling eyes and a hearty laugh! The bees knees!! We sat down with him and he asked us about Gibraltar. He knew our names already, naturally, and he asked me to sing him a song haha! So I did – I gave him my best rendition of “Oh Christmas Tree”. After our encounter with Santa, Ruben and I walked through this amazing corridor full of blue lights, as we kept telling each other “He's the REAL Santa!!”. This trip should be on everyone's bucket list!

We bought some lovely souvenirs (the shops and cafeterias were all quaint and cheerful), and fulfilled the very important task of posting the letters to Santa from all the children in the family back home; we even managed to obtain my niece Alba's contribution, in spite of her resistance to handing over a letter, with the argument - “He knows already”! Who can argue with that? Haha!!

The next day we undertook the most adventurous event of our holiday – snowmobile ride through the forest.... at night! Unfortunately, there are no photos as the excursion proved not uneventful and needed all my concentration. I'd never driven a snowmobile so I was a bit careful at first. However, due to the stupidity of the guide in the middle of the line of snowmobiles, who revved up and left us behind, we managed to get lost in the forest! Thankfully, there was a guide holding up the rear of the convoy so she took over. Needless to say, we spent over an hour, completely lost and my snowmobile even plunged into a snowdrift – now that was scary!

Eventually we returned to our starting point, and after many apologies, we were all offered a refund and we could go back to the hotel, or we could go again. I looked at Ruben and we both cried - “We go again!!”. So off we went, and this time it was marvellous! We stopped at a teepee in the middle of nowhere and we sat down inside drinking hot berry juice and eating cinnamon cookies, listening to Finnish folklore. After that, we were racing over a white tundra, snow falling heavily and temperatures hitting -20 degrees C! This adventure was really thrilling and it left us whooping with exhilaration!

On our last evening, the hotel arranged a special Christmas dinner for all their guests. They dressed up their expansive Dining Room with Christmas decorations, the tables laden with Christmas crackers and all the trimmings. We were sat a a large table with a charming couple from the UK and their two boys. It was a magnificent dinner where we exchanged pleasantries and general chit chat and ate a sumptuous meal worthy of any Festive dinner!

Then came the magical moment when they announced that Santa was on his way to deliver presents! Ruben and I joined all the children outside the hotel haha! Suddenly there were colourful fireworks in the night sky and the sound of tinkling sleigh bells was distinctive in the cold night air. Gradually, Santa came into view sat on his sleigh (not flying of course!) being pulled by a large reindeer (Rudolph?). My eyes filled with tears as I thought of all the other children in our family that could have witnessed this beautiful moment!

After Santa gave out presents to all the children in the hotel, he sat down in the lobby for photographs. We stood back to allow the children to sit with him, but one of the elves approached us and said “Would you like to take a picture with Santa?”. We jumped at the chance like two little kids! Cheese all round please and thank you!

I've been on many holidays to different parts of the world, but never has one felt so special. This trip was full of magic, goodwill, adventure and dreams coming true! As I looked back at the hotel when it was time to go, I was tearful but my heart swelled with joy as I waved goodbye to this beautiful place. Well, not goodbye but “Au revoir”!
